One message that I got from the book is that someone is not born a criminal they are made one. A person can grow up happy but something can affect a person so bad it completely changes their behavior. Things like abuse, peer pressure and alcohol abuse can lead to someone committing a horrible crime. The person who committed a crime like murder is wrong, but does that make it okay to sentence them to death instead of life in prison?

that's an interesting way to think about it. I never would have thought about it that way but I agree with you.

After reading the book, I can agree that this idea is correctly represented and can easily be transferred into real world issues, since events like those you described and those happening today are greatly affecting us as people and the way we think, act, and speak. And for the question, I believe personally it is right to make such a decision for the actions a person has committed against another character, in this case murder, since he took lives away from this world, his own shall be sacrificed to not only fulfill our needs, but to stop such things to happen again.

I totally agree with you! I think the person that most resembles and the character you might be talking about is Perry. One of the two murderers of the Clutter family was Perry and he grew up under really difficult circumstances.

I aggre with the statement that Perry action were formed by his background. Perry is not just defined by his one action that he committed. Capote demonstrate perry in a different form and made me think to not judge on ones actions.

I agree with Ron. There are people in this world that are raised good and sometimes turn out to do ver bad things, and also vice versa. If you are raised badly though, you have more chances of becoming a criminal due to alcohol abuse and other negative things. Peer pressure is definitely another problem as well. Sometimes a person is just forced to do

I definitely agree with you Ron, but I also think it's up to the person to change in the wrong way...Someone might go through hell and back but will still be the same warm hearted person but I definitely understand what u are trying to say.

That's a very interesting answer, which I totally agree with. To add on to that, I think a message I got from the book was everything has a consequence. Like whatever you do, good or bad, will have an outcome. Depending on whether or not you get caught for doing something and get away with it, life will catch up with you.

I totally agree with you Journey. I have been raised like that., and it's just common sense. If you do something bad, and just how you had the guts to do it, now you have to have the guts to pay the consequences. There will always be consequences to whatever you do. No matter if it's good or bad.

I completely agree with you Ron, there are certain things that can make you be a horrible person wether it's something you dealt with when you were young or drugs. But I also believe that if you choose to live life with something that might of happened in your past or if you choose that drugs is the best way to deal with your problems then that's on the person because they are choosing to be influenced by those things to do bad things.

I agree with you Karen, because you can choose to take the right or the wrong path. And if you choose the wrong path that's only the persons fault.

I totally agree with this. Capote had me thinking all over the place. I think the message he tried to deliver was to not assume murders like Perry and Dick were just plain evil people for just some robbery. But no, for Perry it was interesting and scary at the same time how he saw that opportunity to kill people and thought of the Clutter's as those who mistreated or hurt Perry. Its true murders are born naturally they are created either from their home or just hatred from the world that drive them to do insane things that less to hurting another human.

I agree with Ron because i believe human nature is kind, a guy's living environment and his family will have great influences to him, that may lead to a result which is he becomes a criminal.

I agree. I think that people like Perry who clearly suffered some trauma between almost starving and being basically homeless and may have some sort of mental disorder that could have aided in his quest to kill a family like the Clutters (to prove himself to Dick more than anything) don't really deserve the death penalty. But I also think we should question whether we want him to suffer, or to put him out of his misery sooner rather than later.

I agree. No one is born evil, something had to happen for anyone to be like. I think it was better to put him out of his misery.

I definitely agree with this. A person isn't born already with traits. A person has to live and learn to become someone in the world. Being evil is something is something you can become because you've either were taught to be that way or you seek something after being hurt and people being evil to you. I honestly don't believe Dick is an evil person. He is just a man with problems and he doesn't know how to handle them. He then uses his problems and anger a channel them into evil acts.

I think Capote displays the message of looking at different perspectives, especially that of "bad" people that usually are opposed. Capote clearly explains Perry's life so the reader understands him. In a way, Capote tells the reader to not form an opinion on any person despite their actions and character because their truth is unknown until it is found and it cannot be judged right away.

That was very well said and I agree with you. We should not judge or "form an opinion" as you said about anyone because of their actions or character. They could very much be influenced by someone or something that makes them act the way they do.

I totally agree with you Journey. I think the message that applies is that the actions of one person can influence yours. I even thunk this message is applied today. When one person does something I feel like others have the need the follow. Now this could be used in a good and bad way. Now i also believe that the tragedies or hard events that you may have gone through in your earlier life can influence what you do in the future. your past can be powerful enough to overcome your future.

Well, I think that there are a lot of messages that the author wanted to show us. And if we concentrate on one part of the book where people gave all kinds of the guess about the reason of the murder, we can easily found that even the Clutters were a very good family in town, they still had some dark things on the back. All in all, the message I thought was that every one has two sides, both good and bad. And we shouldn't judge a person by only one thing and blame him or her a lot.

I completely agree with you. Everyone does have a good and bad side, some more than others. In the book this was used a lot and like you said people shouldn't be judged by one action or thing that have done in the past

A message that I felt was conveyed in the book was that a dark upbringing can create someone's negative actions later in life. Dick and Perry did not have the best lives before the murders of the Clutters. They were influenced by their greed to do the crime, and were never taught any better. Someone's early life can later influence how the outcome of their adulthood can be.

Someone's childhood can definitely affect the out come of their adulthood but we all know right from wrong it's the path you choose that makes you who you are in the future. I understand they didn't have a great childhood but they chose the path they wanted to be in.

I agree with what you are saying. I feel as if that is for anyone though. They did not grow up having a perfect lifestyle or anything close to it but that goes to show that at a point if you are not taught right and haven't had the best happen to you you just don't care. Perry wanted happiness but never seem to got it. And I think thats what drove him to the edge.

Just think deeply, we see that Perry has a poor life. "In Cold Blood" is not only the literally meaning like " the devoid of humanity". Let's think about Perry, the reason causes him to be " Clod Blood" is because of his life experiences, his background.

The message of this book to me is loud and clear, which is no matter how long it takes justice will be served. In this case the truth will come out when something bad is done- a crime.

I think the message is that we can never know what gonna come to us. More than that is people can be born in different environments that will make them who they are in the future. It means that people change over what surrounds them.

A message that got across to me is that every action has a consequence in life. Throughout this story there are many actions that were made and killing was one of them. It is like that saying, “Eye for Eye, Tooth for Tooth” all the characters eventually had to pay the price, especially the murderer. I look at it as this, whatever goes up must come down and that is exactly what happened. The author was telling the readers to make the right decisions or else life will make you pay the consequences.

I think the message is that human nature is good, a man is not born to be a bad guy, living environments, family, internet, there are countless reasons leading to the birth of a criminal. Therefore we should never judge others without knowing them.

There are many themes found in the novel, for example, masculinity, morality, mental illness, freedom, and more. Capote wanted the readers to see these themes within each of the characters, in an effort to stay away from the usual nonfiction standard of writing that simply states the facts. Writing in these topics make the facts of the true murder story more interesting, especially with the protagonist, Perry. His character is conflicted inside himself and we are conflicted in whether we want to sympathize with him or condemn him. It is much more complex than just "good" and "evil". Here morality comes into play and we must decide how to perceive the characters. Is the message simply that we must see all sides to one's story? No, we as compassionate humans must already do this. The messages are up to us.
