Personally, I feel as if the pictures take away from a readers creativity. When I read I like to imagine my own characters and make a "mini movie" in my mind. That being said I also believe that our own ideas ( in this case characters) help us understand the plots a lot better rather than sticking solely on another's perspective.

I personally love when I have to read picture books. It is easier for me to understand and follow along with the pictures. If I just read something I have to take a pause and create pictures in my mind to know what I'm dealing with, but with that already included, it's much easier and better for me personally. Also the details that this book includes are very intricate and neat; it's not all over the place like some comic books that just confuse you. I also like how they kind of had a Nazi type thing in the book as well. It goes along with it very well.

I agree with you, Diana. While it is fun to create that "mini movie" in your head while you are reading, I find myself wishing that the author gave a visual for me to go off of. While that process of wishing is a painstaking one, it is good either way. But I can say that the content of the book is what determines what makes it "better". But I really do appreciate the fact that this is a graphic novel.

While taking the time to put my thoughts together on the book, I personally believe seeing the understanding of the author's creative way to let the readers have a better sentiment perspective of the holocaust. As a lot of people say the graphics allow you to drag you in how it really was and not let youe creative mind think in a different way..who h sometimes its good but sometimes it's better to actually know and feel what the author wants the reader to genuinely understand.

No, Maos would not be better without pictures. The pictures give the reader a feel of whats happening. Also for some the pictures maybe more understanding than the words. The reader can get so much based off a photo in the comic. The setting, the characters, and the time can be all based in one image. Also it maybe exciting to the reader to be able to visualize the pictures as they reed. Certain images may give off certain feelings to the reader as well.

When I read this book I feel like the picture really bring out the meaning to the story. The picture are a different way to express each word within the book. Without pictures the story may have been seen to the reader differently. An example Is the characters may have been seen differently to the reader. some authors put pictures in there novel to give the reader of the story a specific image of a character or object. Which I believe helps the reader more relate to the character

That is true! The pictures give us visual and help to understand better. If I read Maus in non-pictures version, it's harder to concentrate to the plot and especially for an International student like me. Otherwise, Art's father's life was unstable, he moved to lots of places so the idea to included images in stories is really clever, which helps me a lot in distinguishing characters, also the places.

I agree that pictures may have limitations and that written word can be extremely profound. I wonder, do you believe that the novel's pictures are too simple in appearance? In Maus I on pages 100-103, Artie talks to Mala about his comic strip called "Prisoner on Planet Hell". His drawings here are elaborate and its details are able to convey the heartfelt emotions of its characters. Do you think if Maus had pictures as detailed as these that it would be able to express emotions and situations as skillfully as words can?

Yuxin, your reple makes me think twice and finally I came up with the third choice that to be in the middle. You're right, a book is considered to be a good one is dependent on readers. Somes like to read novel because it gives them enough information. As we experienced making a comic, sometimes images cannot articulate the given datas well. Otherwise, while they're reading , they can image how it gonna be as they prefer it to be, also not to binding into a boring concept but in myriad ways. In another hand, somes are in comic team because while they're reading, they're entertaining at the same time. Also, comics give them visual which help their imaginations not to run too far, and follow ideas of the author. Moreover, pictures help them not to be misunderstood the stories. Thus, I think somes will prefer novel version and somes prefer this graphic comic version because everyone has different opinions.

Back to the previous question as well, I think that the cartoonist and the author had a good visual and a good idea of what they wanted their readers to see. For my own personal reasons, I would rather have descriptive words to make me imagine such a scenario, not have it in front of me. But I can also argue for the sake of others that pictures does make it more simple to comprehend such a complex statement and make the reader relate to what is currently going on the story. What I especially liked is the fact that they included some actual photos of the characters portrayed in the story, making it have a "human" part of it and not having it only be cartoon style all the way. But having the whole story set as an written Biography would make it more interesting for me and a lot more imaginative

The pictures may not be completely accurate, considering the fact that they're just drawings of animals instead of actual people, but it helps give the reader an idea as to what they were experiencing. It just had an emotional attach to it and it was just easier to gain interest to it. Young adults often time can create images by just listening to words. our occipital lobes creates us images that aren't real. for kids images could help them create images because they haven't developed and look looked deep in to the world. but in the case of young adults and adults it just make them only look at one perspective of the story.

Personally I really enjoyed the pictures illustrated in both Maus 1&2. I don't think the books would be the same if they were written as a regular novel. The pictures really set the mood of how horrible the holocaust was, even though they don't really do justice for how much of a terrible genocide it actually was. The pictures were also very helpful when they showed diagrams, like with the gas chambers in the concentration camps. Without any visual images I probably would've been lost or confused while reading the books. So the pictures definitely help me understand this book on a whole other level.

I don't think Maus would have been better without picture just due to the fact that I wouldn't have been able to imagine the story in the way the author had. I wouldn't be able to make some of the distinctions that the pictures clearly give.

No I believe that less people would actually read it. The pictures are what attracted me. They created more controversy for the book. For example the animals he used for each ethnicity is heavily important. Without these clear pictures, we wouldn’t really understand this story.

No I think that the pictures themselves have a great amount of significance not only inside but outside the book. Inside the book atleast for me it helped me get a good picture of what it was like in hitler europe. But I think its more than that. In the book it stated how Vladek would neglected Arties artistic ability. So I think it means a lot that Artie wrote a book combining both his fathers expiriences and his artistic ability. I think it was a way of proving to his father that being an artist could make him succesful. And having his fathers experiences involve in the comic would really change his father perspective. So no it would not have been better with ought pictures they show a big part of who Artie really is and taking away pictures would be taking away the lesson from the book.

Maus would not be better without the pictures. In my own perspective, i think when it comes to learning about the Holocaust, it has to be very meaningful. The arts and everything made me understand it better, it also made me capture my own image as i was reading along. In my opinion, I felt like it showed more emotions.

I feel that Maus would not be better without pictures because it gives the readers more of an idea to understand what is going on in the book. Looking at the pictures actually made me like the book even more and helped me imagine what's going on clearly.

So personally i feel like all the creativity would be gone if the book wasn't like it was. It would just be another holocaust story and like we all know there's already a lot of those. I like how art made all the different types of races different animals because it separated who was who and made the story way easier to understand. For example In regular holocaust books you usually cant tell when a character is part of a certain group until the narrator mentions it , then it gets all confusing. In this book that never happens

If the book didn't have pictures to be honest I don't think no one would want to read the book or kind of understand the book its self. even book is better with picture so you can know what's going on with the character's in the book and since this book is so complex it going to be sort of easier for kids that have trouble reading for them to finally have a boo that they can read instead of just reading words off a paper

Something that I was wondering was why the cartoonist decide the pigs to represent the Poles. I was unsure of that, but I assume that he made the pigs a symbolic representation of Poles because some Poles didn't treat the Jews bad, like the Nazis did.

Absolutely not. Although pictures in books often seem like a childish spin of such a grotesque theme, the images offer a heartbeat to the book. It brings the horror and the disgusting nature of this time to life. Its use of pests and animals instead of humans was also an amazing idea. Often we think of rats as disease ridden creatures. The sight of hanging or starving rats sends chills down our spines and horrifies us to the core

I prefer both because pictures can help the person understand of his looks and shows what he was doing at the better point of view. The pictures can also help younger people to understand how they were like in the past. but even with no pictures so I can give my self an image of how Vladek was living and I like to imagine the things he was trying to do for survival.

Maus would not be a better book if it did not have any pictures, I say this because pictures give you a better visualize at what you should be imagining compared to visualizing something way different. For example, if the characters in Maus were not animals or even different animals I've would have pictured this book as a human book. Pictures just give the reader a good idea of the story and keep them more entertain than just a bunch of words squished together.

I think having the pictures or not depends on the reader. To me having the pictures in Maus helps visualize whats going on and I think it helps me understand the story better, but also with not having the pictures in the story I dont think makes a difference because I can imagine whats happening anyway. So I think it goes both ways.

Maus 1 & 2 without pictures would be confusing for me because it helps tell the story and without the pictures it's like missing a huge part of the story. Spiegelman did right by adding pictures because it's creative and it helps the reader get a better understanding of the book and a bit of the holocaust history.

I don't know if it's just me, but I have been wondering why Vladek destroyed all of his wife's belongings. Yes, he said he was depressed, but if that happened to me, I would do the complete opposite and I would save any little detail that reminded me of or was directly connected to my loved one just like her diaries that he supposedly burned.

I just want to know why Vladek chose to marry Mala if he never really loved her. He has said that it's always been about the money and that she always wants to change his will. He has been through a lot so he shouldn't have to be worrying about his marriage...

I think that Maus is better with the pictures because it helps me understand the story more and because I can visually see what's going on it made it easier to read. Also if they were no pictures I would have never thought that the characters were animals.

Similiar to how a movie better depicts a story the pictures did help me better visualize the situation. Other than my imagination comprehending what tge scenario could be tge pictures show me what is happening

I would say that it would not be better without pictures because you cant actually know how it's like. It is better with pictures because it makes the reader understand it easier than without pics.It helps readers to have more understanding to the story.

I don't think the book will be better without pictures because students wouldn't have as much interest in the book. Also the pictures kind of help the meaning or understanding of the book because the animals show how the Nazi's and the jew's we opposite with the mice and cat's. The picture are also helpful for the student's because the pictures helped me a lot to picture what's going during the story or graphic novel.

I think Maus should keep the pictures to make the book look less boring, sometimes you get bored when you are reading a book full of words, it makes the book becomes a little bit more interesting.

The story itself is good enough without the pictures. However, I think that the pictures did really good job in helping us imagine the world back then.

I feel like pictures was great I love having to read pictures books it just adds more to the story and it can help you relate more. It was fun to read in my opinion with the pictures. If I had to pick between pictures and no pictures I would keep the picture because Maus wasn't really a complicated story but it did help me understand it more and helped me relate to the story more and I'm pretty sure that's the case for most people.

Why did Spiegelman decide to write the book the way he did? Why couldn't he just draw normal depictions? Why animals? It wasn't just mice and cats. He also had frogs, and even pigs and rabits. Why?

I would say that with or without pictures I think the author would still be able to create that portrait he'd want us to see and feel during that time with just his words. I personally have a good time just reading a paper back book and letting my ideas run with the words.

Personally, I believe that illustrations take away from the readers imagination, though then again, this is the author's story, and they should tell it how they want to tell it to make us understand. The pictures in Maus play a huge part in understanding how society had social classes in Europe during WWII and the Holocaust. Granted, they dont help us because we already have context and background understanding of the Holocaust; though if there were someone who didn't have the context that is common about the Holocaust and WWII the pictures in the book could help them realize. No, Maus would not be better with out pictures.

I honestly loved maus with pictures because it gave you some idea on whats truly happening in the book, and I feel that if it didn't have pictures some people wouldn't understand it if they haven't learned about World War 2.

I say no because I like how it shows us what Vlasek went through during the holocaust and what the Germans did to him during that time period. It showed us the bodies of Jews cramped in a room, Vlasek had to walk on them to get too the bathroom so its shows us a little what it could've been like for us if we were present at that time.
