Reflect on one or more of these questions: What are your first thoughts about the book? What did you think the book was going to be about based on the cover? on the first few pages? Was your first impression correct? How did your opinion of the book changed as you read it?

My first thoughts about the book was how will a thin book like this with illustrations teach me more about the Holocaust? In the end I learned a few new things like killing of Jews even after the war and horrible ways they were treated. At first the way the races were depicted got me confused but I understood later on.

I agree with you I was also very surprised that a graphic novel could teach me so much about this important time of history.

Maus is the first graphic novel I've ever read and I personally find it less boring than traditional novels. I was most impressed by how Vladek managed to survive during the war. If I were him, I wouldn't have been able to handle the situation so calmly.

My first impression is not knowing what to expect from the book. I was doubtful that comic can portray the horror of the holocaust but after reading it, I changed my mind. I think this story painted the picture well of what the holocaust look like. Seeing the story of a survivor and the raw emotions of suffering, guilt and happiness puts me in a position where I can better empathize with the victims of this meaningless cruelty.

Looking at just the cover , the books look like something I wouldn’t normally read if I had options so I wasn’t very excited. I flipped the pages before I read and actually thought that it looked interesting and something I might not be bored reading. I also thought I might have trouble understanding what was going on in the book because I saw a lot of weird and confusing names that I wouldn’t be able to keep track of but once I read the book it wasn’t all that hard.

I knew by the cover of the book that it was going to be about the Nazis, especially just seeing the symbols. I didn't get the idea about using mice as Jews at first until I read the book. I found it clever how the title of the series fits the idea of a mouse or mice because they sound similar. I didn't know what to expect of it. I thought it was a novel with all these paragraphs to read. That's what I was thinking at first.

My first impressions were nothing special to be honest. I thought that I was just going to be another summer reading book but once I read those first few pages, I was shocked by how good and detailed the story was so far. Seeing the perspective of a holocaust survivor and trying to understand what happened and where the story goes as I kept reading.

I agree I was pretty skeptical as to if I would like this book, but I enjoyed it. I found it refreshing to see another point of view of this tragic event. I liked the artwork too, it turned cold tragedy into something softer for more sensitive readers. I also liked that the book accommodated for my laziness and was simple as well as quick to read.

My first impression of the book was based on the cover. When I saw the swastika I need this book had to do with the holocaust. I was correct of course because the covers of books more than likely connects to the idea of the story. As I started to read the book I started to like it because I like comic books. I started to get more interested as read then book because there wasn’t much to read. I was able to read it and still not get tired.

Wow, I wouldn’t have guessed just by looking at the cover of this book that it would be about the holocaust. I am impressed by this because it honestly did get tiring for me, especially this constant black and white illustration. It could’ve taken longer for Spiegelman to put in in color like the cover but I mean I would’ve waited.

This graphic novel has beat others that I have read and I really like the second volume as it stacks more information and is the better story to me, almost as if it were like the cherry on top. The images do help you understand the story easier. I like how the characters were portrayed as animals as well. It was all hard for me to get at first but then I figured it out

I agree with you he did a really good job portraying groups of people with an animal. The animals he chose for groups of people describe the relationship they had with each other. It was also a little confusing for me to follow the words and the pictures but I got used to it.

My first thoughts of the book was that it would be more direct and dramatic. The books start off with a family talking to each other and a son asking his father about his past. Even though he was holocaust survivor his story is a calm story about how he met his son's mother.

My first thoughts of this book was that it would just be a "sugar codded" version of the holocaust. Turns out I was wrong, I was amazed at the amount of detail the book has about the holocaust.

I agree with you. I feel like when I saw that it was gonna be about the Holocaust I didn’t think it was going to be serious, or it was going to leave out the dark stuff, just because most comics that I’ve read aren’t really based off of something serious. But I was wrong this book really helped me know more about the war and how people managed to survive.

I agree with you Randhy, my first anital thoughts were that this was a kids book and explaining how the holocaust was, in a PG version.

I thought it was going to lecture us by giving us facts which would not make me intrigued. Seeing that it is a story of a family during that time made me read more of the adversity he faced.

This is the first graphic novel i've read in awhile (besides some manga) and I honestly loved it. The details, the drawing, how it told a STORY about a survivor not just giving facts about the Holocaust. The symbolism of using animals to represent the different groups of people. I really liked it overall.

I really thought that the book was going to be boring. Or actually i didnt know what to expect when i first started the book. When i first saw the cover I immediately knew what's it going to be about. I thought i knew everything i need to know about the Holocaust but as i started reading there were many things i guess i didnt know. Such as i didnt know how people were living during that time which surprised me a lot as i started to read.

My first thoughts as I started reading was I thought it was kind of slow and boring in the beginning but as I kept reading it got more interesting and I started to really like it. I thought the book was going to be direct and just tell his dads story like how the camp was. But instead the writer actually told his story in a lot of detail than I expected for a comic book he even wrote in parts from when he would go visit his dad like what his dad would be doing or his conversations with mala. And the writer told the story of how his parents met and everything that led up to his dad going to the concentration camp.

Anissa, I agree with you. I wasn't expecting much from this book at all, but once I read a couple of pages I started to get into it. I too got sucked into the artwork, but as events began to unfold I started to focus on the story more. I also appreciate the author keeping in mind other points of view of the same event, aside from his fathers. Overall I'm surprised and glad I like the book since I'm picky when it comes to the books I chose to read.

My first thoughts of the book just by the cover knew it was going to be about the holocaust because of the symbol and the clothes. When I first started reading the book it was boring but as you read it you get to understand what is was like for Jews. I’ve always been very interested in learning about the holocaust so I’m glad I got more details about it by reading this book.

When I first seen the cover of this book I knew it was going to be interesting. I had a feeling it was going to be about the holocaust because I had seen the nazi sign in the front cover, just with a mouse in the middle. I had a feeling hat the characters in this graphic novel might have been mouse because of the cover and I was right.

Honestly one of my first thoughts while first reading the book was, why is our teacher making us read this? but as i was reading it, there were many lessons i learned from it and that made it interesting. I also thought to myself, why are the main characters mice.

My first impression on this book was it’s a comic book, its nothing like books we’ve read in freshman or sophomore year. Even though the book was talking about the Holocaust, the characters were portrait as an animal, mice, instead of human. The art of the book was special to me, it gave me an unique vibe, feeling about it.

My first thought was ” is this what they are really making us read” I really didn’t think much of it. I thought it was gonna be a fast book that I can read in like 4 days. It had a lot of pictures so I was just curious of why they’ll make us read this. Little did I know it was going to be one pure, truthful, raw, book.

When I saw and started reading this book I honestly didn't want to because there was no color, and it looked boring. As I turned the pages, I noticed that I couldn't stop. It got more and more interesting as I kept reading, and now, I'm glad that I did read it, because I learned a lot and discovered that graphic novels aren't always bad.
