My first impression of the book was interesting because I didn’t think there would be a book on nazi that is a comic book. Also I like how when the book first started Artie was a little kid now the first chapter is not a little kid. I wish it would’ve showed how he became older, they probably do but I guess I will find out when I read more.

My first impression of the book was that it's really impressive how the author comprised the hardest time for the Jews into a comic book. In a way, I believe that this sort of platform would make it understandable than any other type of reading. It makes it really interesting how the author brought it upon himself to picture the time of Hitler and the Nazis in this way.

I didn't really thought much of the book when I first saw the cover. I just assume it as another story but I was very surprised by how well detailed and interesting the book was as I continued to read and understand the story of what someone had experienced during the holocaust and how it affected their lives.

I didn't feel challenged since it was a graphic novel and that was the first thought that came to mind. So then I became bored and not interested so I slacked. But I had to eventually read it and then I got into the story. I already somewhat knew what it was about before I read it, but it got better as I read.

My first impressions of the book was that it would be gritty and more violent. The books are more calm and relaxed and dialogue heavy

Honestly before even opening up to the pages of the book I thought that the book was going to be in German. This novel wasn’t really challenging when first beginning to read but I will say that when the chapters switched for instance, it was hard for me to tell if the father was talking or the son when the story was being described. I had another observation while reading which was how it was text but also like bubbles around the certain characters which meant that they were talking which I actually liked. I liked it because it’s more detail and plus I feel like it’s necessary since the story is being told. By the end of Maus 1 I also like how you were left with like a cliffhanger “murderer” so once I was finished I was ready to jump into Maus 2 and see what else happened and how the novel ended overall.

Yes diamond I agree with you. The cliffhanger makes you want to keep reading. It was smart to put the cliffhanger at the end so that it makes the reader want to keep going. Well done to Art for adding that in.

Before I started reading the book I thought it would be a really cool comic that was based on the holocaust. But as I started reading I started to understand how deep this book actually is. As I finished the book I then understood how difficult the time period was for Jews and what they had to go through. Especially through Vladek’s point of view.

At first, I did not think at all this book would be informative. Usually books that give so much information are regular novels (at least for me). As I started to read, it read like just a personal story, kind of like a diary but in 3rd person. Further on I did realize it was deeper than what I thought. I think it is important to have an open mind reading this, because the way you think can really affect your understanding of this book.

I can also agree with you Jessica. Graphic novels are usually quick and easy to read too. But I think that Maus gave a lot of information in a personal way instead of a literal way. I think it’s better because we can get a raw opinion on the tragic historical event.

I agree with you, the book being a graphic novel made it more easier to read. It drew me in more to read all the information it provides us.

My first impression of the book is that it has a really nice art style. The illustrations Spiegelman created really stood out to me because it made me wanna continue reading. I really like the fact that it was two parts to the book which means it’s going to be really detailed. I really like the fact that the author used animals instead of humans because it reminds of the book animal farm because is the talking animals. Overall I am fairly excited to get into these two graphic novels.

I agree with you, I think that the art style made me more motivated to read the story. The illustrations have so much detail, and I think that the writing has just as much. Its clear to me that the author put a lot of time, and a lot of care into this book.

My first impressions on the book were that it was going to be boring honestly. I don’t really gravitate toward any graphic novels because I think books with a lot of pictures distract from the story. I would much rather read realistic fiction or even fiction novels. As I read though, I really liked how the story was still the center focus even with all of the pictures that were in it. It could be a story on its own without the pictures too. I feel like the author did a great job with making the story personal and real.

When I first started reading, I thought that the book had really good drawings. The story and the drawings go really good together and I can actually get a sense on the time period and how the Jews were living.

When I first looked at the book I knew instantly I was going to like it because it didn’t just have words like any another book but it it had drawings which made the book more interesting. Also I think the illustrator did a great job putting in details on the germans and jews appearance on animals.

My first impressions of the book were that it was going to be really informative. I looked at the front and back covers and the back had a map on it. I assumed that it would mean there would be a lot of locations the characters would be going. The map made it easier to understand the plot as well because I would get confused while reading.

When I first started reading this book I had no clue what to think. I remember my sister recommended it to me because she read it her junior year in English as well but I didn’t know what it was about at all. I was interested in how how there was sort of a journalist inside of the book asking these questions about his story and them going back in time and showing what actually happened in a comic strip which was cool to me. I thought that I was going to have to open a book up with just words but this surprised me.

When I first saw the book I thought it was gonna be boring in all honestly but as I actually started to read it I started to like it. What really just grabbed my attention was the fact that like how people were treated back then and how the community just was in general. Especially families that lost a lot during the Holocaust.

The book to me seemed like it was going to relate to the holocaust. I felt like the book was okay to me. It was just talking about the struggles Vladek faced as he went through the holocaust. I did though loved the fact it had pictures because it kept me drawn in because usually when I read a story that goes on and on without pictures I tend to zone out.

At first I was surprised because I didn’t know that Maus was a comic book. I was also surprised and confused for why most of the characters were mice. I already knew the book was going to be something about Nazis and Jews but when I saw the mice I wondered if I had the right book.

My first impression of the book was, I might actually like this because I love graphic novels and comics. The only difference was that this book had a more serious matter. It took you on a roller coater of emotions which often made me upset. I was able to finish both book pretty fast because like I said, I love graphic novels.

At first I was expecting the two books to be like the Diary of Anne Frank, but it was different. I felt more triggered for sure with these comics. I hated how the Germans treated the Jews. They even killed innocent children when they cried for help. Also Maus reminds me of how America is going right now with immigration

My first impression of the book. At first I was impressed by the fact that they made us read a graphic novel for a summer book. But as you read the couple first pages it’s not an ordinary graphic novel. It tells of a story that can touch you or get you deep within. I thought it was very creative to tell a story through a graphic novel. I haven’t read a graphic novel that still was able to provide detailed information without even having to describe it, you can just, notice it from the pictures or foreshadowing.
